GREENVILLE, NC—Chris Powell, a member of the inaugural 2005 River Rats and now a junior at East Carolina University, has been selected to wear the number 23 jersey honoring former ECU head baseball coach Keith LeClair. "The number is awarded annually to a deserving player who best displays the hustle, determination and desire that made LeClair a great coach and player," according to ECU's website.
Powell was 0-1 with a 3.29 ERA in five appearances (two starts) for the River Rats in 2006. He is a two-year letterman with the Pirates with 33 career appearances, a 1-4 record and 25 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched.
Powell is the fifth Pirate to wear number 23 since the tradition was created in 2003. He is the first pitcher ever selected for the honor. |
