The "Challenge" involves more than 6,800 students in five counties and was profiled in an article in this morning's New Bern Sun Journal.
The "Home Run Reading Challenge" is sponsored by Coastal Children's Clinic and endorsed by the Craven Literacy Council. It rewards students for reading books during a two month period starting March 15 and ending May 15. Students can earn prizes including River Rats tickets and temporary tattoos, mini-golf games from Swing Zone Family Fun Park, ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery, and food from Chick-fil-A.
"We are excited to unveil the Challenge as our first large-scale community outreach program," said Michael Weisbart, General Manager of the River Rats. "It will be exciting to see how the program develops in its first year."
