RIVER RATS ADD TWO LOCALS TO '07 ROSTER;
3B SANDERS RETURNS, 1B TOWARNCKY JOINS CLUB

NEW BERN, NC—The River Rats added two former New Bern High School standouts to the roster today, announcing that Young Harris College third baseman Matt Sanders and Appalachian State first baseman David Towarnicky. 

Sanders, a 6'2, 175 lb., sophomore, hit .255 in 51 games with the River Rats in 2006, including nine doubles, three home runs, and 21 RBIs.  Through 42 games with Young Harris this spring, Sanders is hitting .343 with 18 doubles, 4 home runs, and 41 RBIs.  Sanders has committed to transfer to Clemson for the fall semester. 
 
"Matt was a solid player for us and we look forward to an even bigger year this summer," said River Rats Vice President of Operations, Buddy Bengel.  "He has good tools and we believe he will be an important part in helping us bring a title to New Bern this summer."
 
Towarnicky, a 6'0, 200 lb., lefthanded freshman, is hitting .273 with two home runs and 19 RBIs in 27 games.  In three years at New Bern High School, he hit .375, including .471 during his senior season.  During his final three seasons with the Bears, he led the team in home runs, doubles, triples, slugging percentage, walks, and intentional walks. 
 
"David's hitting and fielding should both help us at first base this season," said Bengel.  "He is having a productive freshman year and we are confident he can continue that success during the summer."

The New Bern River Rats baseball club is a member of the Coastal Plain League, a high-profile wood-bat collegiate summer baseball league.  The team will open the 2007 season on Wednesday, May 30 against the Wilmington Sharks at New Bern High School’s Boykin Field.  All 57 games can be heard on the Meinke Car Care Center Broadcasts on ESPN Radio 1490 AM.
