NEW BERN, NC—The River Rats pitching staff added three new members today, as the team signed lefthander Nick DeMeo of Pace University, righthander David Jones of the University of Virginia-Wise, and righthander Donald Jordat of Miami Dade College. DeMeo, a native of Farmingville, New York, is 5-11, 175 lbs., and a sophomore at Pace. In 9 starts for the Setters, Nick is 1-4 with a 4.81 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched."Nick gives us a quality LHP with good talent," said River Rats head coach Darin Vaughan. "We expect him to log a lot of innings and help in reaching the goals of our franchise."
Jones is 6-3, 205 lbs., and a junior for the UVA-Wise Highland Cavaliers. David is the team leader in games (14), games started (11), and complete games (6), while posting an 8-4 record and a 2.32 ERA. The native of Amelia, Virginia, has 70 strikeouts in 62 innings pitched and is limiting opponents to a .226 batting average. "David was highly recommended by people we trust," said Vaughan, "and we look forward to him joining the River Rats. He is having a fantastic season which we hope will continue into the summer. David has had success pitching out of the bullpen and success as a starter. We expect him to play a big part in our pitching staff this summer."
Jordat, a native of Palm Beach, Florida, is 6-3, 225 lbs., and a freshman for the Miami Dade Sharks. He is 2-2 with a 1.64 ERA in 15 games, including 44 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched and four saves. "Donald comes from one of the most successful and tradition-rich junior college programs in the country," said Vaughan. "We have heard many great things about his talent and we look forward to the opportunity to help him improve and reach his ultimate goals."
The updated 2007 River Rats roster is on the team's website at www.newbernriverrats.com. The River Rats third season opens three weeks from Wednesday on May 30, as the River Rats host the Wilmington Sharks at New Bern High School's Boykin Field.
Rats notes: River Rats "Traditional" and "Flex" season tickets are now on sale. Traditional season tickets include one game ticket for each of the 30 River Rats home games in 2007 and are priced at $100 for adults, $75 for seniors and military, and $50 for children ages 3 to 12. Flex plans include 30 undated vouchers which can be used in any combination for River Rats 2007 home games. In addition to discounted ticket prices, season ticket holders receive a number of extra benefits. These include a VIP Parking Pass (one per account, first 30 accounts only) and specials events like our “Meet the Players” pre-season picnic and “Batting Practice with the Team” in-season event.
